| Press Conference: Akhmed Zakaev Freed and Returned to London |
|
Akhmed Zakaev (Chairman of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria Cabinet of Ministers) has spoken today for the first time of his arrest by Polish authorities last Friday September 17 as he was due to address the World Chechen Congress. He was joined by Ivar Amundsen, director of Chechnya Peace Forum and fellow speaker at the Congress, to give an account of how he had initiated the appointment with the Polish prosecutor, and to announce the resolution agreed by the conference of the Chechen diaspora.
Zakaev was released later on Friday evening as the Polish courts accepted the ruling of the Bow Street Magistrates in London, and other previous rulings by European countries, against the extradition request by Russia.
Speaking at a press conference on his return to London Akhmed Zakaev, (Chairman of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria Cabinet of Ministers) said:
"I took the initiative to meet with the Polish authorities before my so-called ‘arrest', but I faced a deeply unpleasant detention as I waited to see what would prevail: the rule of law - or political pressure by Russia, with the threat of two months in custody hanging over me.
"I am absolutely delighted that the Polish authorities rightly saw through the baseless allegations of request for my extradition. I believe that this now finally invalidates Russia's Interpol warrant against me, and simply exposes their illegitimate campaign to cover up the denial of democracy and human rights abuses against the Chechen people."
Ivar Amundsen, Director of the Chechnya Peace Forum said:
"I was confident in leading calls for Zakaev's release because the Russian government's case has been disregarded previously in multiple countries, including Poland. In fact this clumsy move by the Russian authorities has only served to shine a light on their intimidation of anyone who speaks the truth about the dire situation in Chechnya, and for that I thank them." |

Akhmed Zakaev (Prime Minister of the Maskhadov continuation government) added:
"As a result of the consultations which have just ended in London, we have come to a unanimous conclusion about the necessity to convene the World Chechen Congress. The Congress will enable us to work out a joint political platform on all crucial issues facing the Chechen people today, and in the future."
Ivar Amundsen, Director of the Chechnya Peace Forum said:
"In my capacity as the mediator of these talks in London, I am delighted that both parties in these Russian-Chechen consultations have taken an important step towards transforming the geopolitical landscape which can have a radical impact in both Russia and Chechnya. By reaching an agreement on the need to convene the World Chechen Congress, the prospects for Chechen-Russian relations and the Chechen people are going in the right direction for the first time in 20 years."
