font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:black'>This week, the AFP reports:  Russia on Friday disqualified the sole liberal challenger to Vladimir Putin in March 4 presidential elections, in a move slammed by his supporters as undermining the legitimacy of the polls. Russia's central elections commission said it could not accept nearly a quarter of the registration signatures gathered by Grigory Yavlinsky because they were either photocopies of originals or fakes. The restriction has been heavily criticised by the candidates as well as the growing protest movement against Putin, who will be standing for a third Kremlin term in the polls after his four year stint as prime minister. The disqualification  undermines the legitimacy of the vote. This was ordered directly by Putin, said Sergei Mitrokhin, chairman of the liberal Yabloko (Apple) party that Yavlinsky founded in 1993. <br> <br> Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports:  Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin may face a presidential run-off in March against Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov as his support fell for the first time since last month, according to two opinion polls. Putin, who needs more than half the vote on March 4 to avoid a second round, will get 49 percent, according to the Jan. 21-22 survey of 1,600 people by the state-run All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion, known as VTsIOM. He will receive 44 percent, according to a Jan. 21-22 poll of 3,000 people by the Public Opinion Foundation, known by its Russian acronym, FOM. <br> <br> The report continues:  The Russian leader, 59, who suffered a slide in popularity in recent years, is facing the biggest challenge to his rule since he came to power 12 years ago after mass protests sparked by allegations of fraud in Dec. 4 legislative polls. The opposition plan their next major rally in Moscow on Feb. 4.  The Kremlin will do everything to ensure Putin wins in the first round, Stanislav Belkovsky, director of the Moscow- based Institute for National Strategy, said by telephone today.  But the situation is getting out of the Kremlin s control.  <br> <br> Elsewhere, the Moscow Times reports:  Once again, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has refused to participate in presidential debates. He skipped out in the 2000 and 2004 presidential races, and two weeks ago Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman, announced that Putin was too busy to participate in the 2012 debates, scheduled for next month. This explanation is hardly convincing. Throughout his decade in power, Putin has found the time to conduct 10 live call-in shows  each lasting from three to four hours and famous for their soft, staged questions. At the same time, however, it is understandable why Putin is more scared of debates this time around. A Levada Center poll in early January showed that only 42 percent of voters would vote for Putin in the first round. By facing even mildly uncomfortable questions from the other four candidates in the debate, all of whom are considered Kremlin friendly, Putin would still run the risk that this rating could drop even further before the election. <br> <br> Finally, Radio Free Europe reports:  The leader of Russia's Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, has denounced as enemies of Russia the activists who have organized protests over the country's disputed December elections for the State Duma lower house of parliament. RFE/RL's Russian Service reports that Kadyrov, speaking to journalists in the city of Kislovodsk in the Russian North Caucasus, said that if he had the power he would have arrested all the organizers of the  For Fair Elections protests.
