font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:black'>This week, Eurasia Daily Monitor reports:  As Western nations and the Arab League are pressing a draft United Nations Security Council resolution that seeks to ease President Bashar al-Assad out of power and condemn the regime for its violence against protesters, Russia has been steadfastly resisting, threatening to use its UN Security Council veto power. Russian support for the Syrian regime is predominately internal in nature, as is the constant recall of the Libyan example. The West went after Slobodan Milosevic, Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi. They are all dead. The West will dispatch al-Assad, they will come for us, Russia s chief justice (chairman of the Constitutional Court), Valery Zhorkin, wrote last week. Russian national interests and assets at risk in Syria do not seem to validate a steadfast stand to defend a doomed butcher, disregarding international and Arab opinion. In fact, Putin and the Russian corrupt top elite are defending not al-Assad, but themselves. <br> <br> Elsewhere, Masha Karp reviews BBC Documentary  Putin, Russia &amp; the West for Human Rights in Russia:  Beginning with Putin s first interview as Russia s Prime Minister on 9 August 1999, through a remarkable shot of Yeltsin staggering and nearly falling into the arms of his bodyguards, the documentary takes us straight to Yeltsin s resignation on 31December 1999. Five months, which proved crucial in the country s history, are missing. There are no controversial apartment bombings, which helped Putin to make the case for the Second Chechen War, there is nothing of Berezovsky s TV campaign to promote Putin and help him win the presidential elections in March, and  most importantly  there is no Chechen war! <br> <br> The review continues:  The bombing of a refugee convoy and massacres of Chechen villages, which took place at the very beginning of the so called  anti-terrorism operation , launched in September 1999, were the first in a long line of crimes committed by the Russian authorities and subsequently condemned by the European Court of Human Rights. Together with thousands of other events, which never received international attention, these were the early atrocities of the Second Chechen War which horrified Anna Politkovskaya and inspired her commitment to writing the truth about Chechnya, and eventually giving her life for it. They are not even mentioned in the film. <br> <br> Meanwhile, Peter Oborne also reviews the BBC documentary, for the Daily Telegraph:  The blurb used to publicise the film suggests that the BBC has heavily bought into prime minister Putin s own narrative:  How the great Soviet superpower, crushed and humiliated, has been resurrected in the form of Vladimir Putin s new Russia [...] Putin could hardly have written a more glowing account of his achievements  particularly the implication that he has rescued Russia from being  crushed and humiliated . There are important omissions from the film, and there has been no coverage of the Moscow apartment bombings of August 1999, which enabled Putin to make the case for the Second Chechen War and which were almost certainly carried out by the FSB. Furthermore, this Chechen conflict was an event of hideous brutality, bordering on a genocide: the BBC presents it as something closer to a routine counter-insurgency. <br> <br> Finally, the Moscow Times reports:  Prime Minister and leading presidential candidate Vladimir Putin acknowledged for the first time Wednesday that he might face a runoff in the March election but warned that it might result in the  destabilization of the country.  There is nothing horrible about a runoff, Putin said, telling a group of young lawyers in televised remarks that he was ready for it. According to the state-run polling group VTsIOM, Putin has about 50 percent support among voters, far more than any other registered candidate.
